Don't miss
The eastern tip of Madeira, where the green runs out and the island turns to bare volcanic rock.
The rest of Madeira is forest and terraces. This peninsula is the opposite: dry, treeless and red-ochre, with the sea on both sides of the path and cliffs striped in layers of ash and lava.
A tipThere is no shade and almost always wind. Take water, a hat and proper shoes, and start early.
